Parsons is recipient of many honors and awards including: a National Endowment of Humanities Dante Fellowship to the State University of New York, the French-American Legation Poetry Prize, and the 2006 Baskerville Publisher’s Prize from TCU for an outstanding poem published in their literary journal, descant. He holds six Writing Awards from the Lone Star College System and he was named Montgomery County Poet Laureate for 2005 – 2010 and Finalist for Texas State Poet Laureate for 2010. Parsons was elected to The Texas Institute of Letters in 2009. David Parsons’ third collection of poetry Feathering Deep (Texas Review Press) is forthcoming in 2011. His first book Editing Sky was winner of the Texas Review Poetry Prize and a Violet Crown Book Award Special Citation. Parsons teaches Creative Writing and Kinesiology (Racquetball/Handball) at Lone Star College-Montgomery and Poetry Workshops at Inprint Inc. in Houston. Parsons attended The University of Texas (Austin) and Texas State University, where he holds a BBA. After several years in business, advertising, and coaching baseball and basketball at Bellaire High School, he received an MA in Creative Writing & Literature from the University of Houston; where, he studied with such poetry luminaries as Edward Hirsch, Robert Pinsky, Richard Howard, Stanley Plumly, and the late Howard Moss, long-time poetry editor of The New Yorker. He is founder and Co-Director of the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council Writers In Performance Series, Chairman of Conroe Arts Alliance. After serving for 17 years on the Conroe Commission on the Arts & Culture, over 14 years as Chairman, the city honored him proclaiming October 7, 2010, Dave Parsons Day in Conroe. Parsons has four grown children Robert (an Instructional Science Coach, for Kingwood ISD with a BA in Music from UTA, a Masters in Science Teaching from Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University, and a Master in Educational Leadership from SHSU). Laura Doehrman (a Special Education Diagnostician at Magnolia ISD with a BA in Advertising from SHSU and a Masters in Special Education from Texas A&M University), Dr. Brandy Parsons-Miller (a Clinical Psychologist in Austin with a BA in English/Psychology from The University of Texas in Austin and Doctor of Clinical Psychology from UT Medical School in Dallas), and Allison Paige Parsons (a student at Lone Star College-Montgomery). and lives with wife Nancy, an award winning Artist and Graphic Designer.
